Spring fashion goes feminine and bold

Spring fashion goes feminine and bold

By Erica Drum

Greetings, fashionistas! My name is Erica Drum, I own Audrey’s Boutique in downtown Alexandria. I’ve worked in retail for over a decade and I love what I do. I’m excited to announce I’ll be writing a column every season, bringing you the sacred word of fashion! So hold on to your hat (and all your other accessories, of course) while we dive into what’s hot in the fashion world.

Patterns and Prints
Go bold or go home! Spring Fashion 2016, it’s all about attention-grabbing prints and patterns! If you’re like me and enjoy keeping up with the runway, you know Spring Fashion Week 2016 was overrun with various patterns and prints.

Victorian
Get ready for a major #throwback, while we rewind more than a century! That’s right, back in style are Victorian-inspired looks. Queen Vicky might be long gone but she continues to reign over the runway. This spring you can expect to see ruffles, puffy sleeves, high-collar necklines and floral patterns galore! The feminine-feel blends well with a plethora of spring looks. Fashion tip, pair a floral print dress with a jean jacket for a cute and polished feel.

Stripes
Surrender to fashion this spring and you may find yourself behind bars! This season’s boldest trend is stripes, copious amounts of stripes! Everyone from Alexander Wang to Prada is strapping into the stripe-wagon. Thick, thin, swirly, rigid, you can expect to see a hearty variety of stripes this spring. This look carries an unyielding quality; bold stripes are sure to add a dash of confidence to any wardrobe. Fashion tip, if you’re searching for a slimming look, try vertical stripes!

Latin-Inspired
Grab your sunglasses and prepare your eyes for Latin-inspired, bright and vibrant prints! Many designers have incorporated hints of Latin culture into their 2016 collections, from DVF (Diane von Fürstenberg) to Michael Kors. Also drawn from this inspiration, you’ll find pom-pom, trims, and colorful beading. I have to say, this look is a personal favorite! I may be a Minnesota girl but I was born in the sunshine state. Seeing this Latin-inspired garb transports me to sandy beaches and warmer climates. Alexandria tends to have a pretty rainy spring season, so don these prints to bring out your inner sunshine! Style tip: Pair a bright, Latin-inspired, printed top with a white pant or shorts, for an absolutely eye-popping ensemble.

Victorian florals, bold stripes, and saucy prints … how’s a fashion-lover to choose? The good news is you don’t have to! Follow these trends or mix and match prints, colors and styles to create your own spring collection. Because, remember, there’s no rules in fashion, baby! Until next time, my fashion-friends.
