Summer in the city or summer in this area means LOTS to do! The baskets are hung on Broadway and the city and surrounding areas are looking absolutely fantastic! (Yes, I am aware there are some construction areas that are troublesome – but, they will turn out really good by next year and make things even better!)
Now that you’ve gotten your planting and cleaning up outdoors done and are ready to enjoy the area, there are festivals and fun activities almost every week and weekend around the area. Watch your local newspaper for details. Memorial Day and the Fourth of July give us a patriotic feel for the first half of the summer and then we tend to move into the last half of the summer with the panicked feeling that we have wasted the summer or it has gone too fast … so, take time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings we have in this area and enjoy the lakes, beaches and parks while they are at their prime!
This area almost triples in size in the summer with tourists – we need and depend on them for our economy. We sometimes forget how important tourism is to our area and are only irritated by the extra drivers on the roads and the longer lines at the supermarkets and other stores. Stop and ask someone where they are from and what they are doing in Alexandria – you will find a nice story and probably find out what a small world it really is – as well as make Alexandria a place people want to come back to and remember year after year!
As mayor, I am so proud of Alexandria and all it has to offer and the wonderful people that live here in this area! We are thriving and growing and doing so much better than many other areas of the state and country. So stop and smell the roses this summer – be friendly to our tourists and neighbors alike.
Lastly, even though Memorial Day is over, let’s not forget our veterans. Keep them in our hearts and prayers year round, especially those veterans who are alive and who have or are currently fighting for us or those who gave their lives. Our freedom and way of life is because of their dedication and bravery.
